ATTO PRIMO ACT ONE

VOCI INTERNI
Luce! Luce dei cuori!
Fiori ed incensi,

A grassy clearing in a forest. In the left foreground stand some century-old trees. Amongst the trees are some small patches of flowers. A moss-covered stone bench is shaded by the hanging branch of a blossoming vine. On the right, a brook flows with a soft rippling sound, through dense vegetation. A small bridge spans the brook. On the left, a monastery can barely be seen, far in the distance, upon a hill. All around as far as the eye can see is the wild forest, uneven, just leaving space here and there for a narrow footpath. It is dawn. A thin mist hangs over the temple. Grave chants can be heard

You shine victorious!
(The morning sun begins to shine.)VOICES OF A DISTANT HUNT (wildly)
O-ho! O-ho! O-ho! O-ho!
(Alcuni mendichi, ansimanti, si affretteranno verso l’eremo.)

ALCUNI MENDICHI (in scena)
Eremiti, salvate le sacre gazzelle!
È la caccia del Re!

(Some beggars, breathless, rush towards the monastery)

SOME BEGGARS (on stage)
Hermits, save the sacred gazelles!
It is the King’s hunt!

(Al richiamo, gli asceti appariranno sulla soglia. Alcuni avanzeranno perplessi, sbigottiti.

HARITA
Ah! Come salvare
I cervi, I caprioli?

(Hearing the call, the ascetics appear on the threshold. Some move forward, perplexed, surprised. Suddenly the tumultuous hunt rushes in from the right, disappearing soon after amongst the trees.)

HARITA
Ah! How can we save
the deer, the roe-bucks?

Ecco, depongo l’arco,
E a voi mi inchino, fratelli…HARITA
Tu sei buono, o Re!

THE YOUNG HERMIT
The sacred animals of the monastery!(A young man appears, his bow aimed at a gazelle running in the trees. The hermits recoil and shout as one:)THE YOUNG HERMIT, HARITA, THE HERMITS
The King!(The young man is still poised to cast his arrow. Two hermits, moving towards him and kneeling down:)THE YOUNG HERMIT, HARITA
Our King… Have mercy!
(The King turns towards them in surprise.)HARITA
It is the sacred gazelle of the monastery…
Do not cast your arrow!THE YOUNG HERMIT
Do not cast your arrow!
Don’t you see how gentle it is?HARITA
How can it harm you?THE KING (who has moved to the centre of the stage)
Here, I lay down my bow,
And I bow to you, my brothers…HARITA
You are good, my King!
Your countenance glows with a kindness
Which gives us hope…THE KING
How can I be of help?

(The two hermits look at each other for a moment, hesitating.)

 IL GIOVANE EREMITA
Poi che la buona sorte
T’ha condotto sul nostro cammino,
Noi ti preghiamo, o Re,
Pei fratelli dell’eremo…IL RE (incoraggiando affabilmente)
 THE YOUNG HERMIT
Since a benign fate
Led you to our path,
We beseech you, o King,
On behalf of our brothers of the monastery…THE KING (gently prodding them on)
What is your command, my brothers?HARITA
Since Kanva, our leader, has gone missing,
The evil spirits never cease to tempt us at night…
IL GIOVANE EREMITA
Turbano le preghiere e I sacrifizi!HARITA
O Re, entra nell’eremo!IL GIOVANE EREMITA
Salvaci dai nemici d’ogni bene…HARITA (fervente e solenne)
THE YOUNG HERMIT
They disturb our prayers and sacrifices!HARITA
O King, come into the monastery!THE YOUNG HERMIT
Deliver us from the enemies of goodness…HARITA (fervently and solemnly)
You have power over all things… all men!THE KING
I shall be happy to help!THE YOUNG HERMIT
Kanva left behind Sakuntala, his daughter…
She is like a protecting goddess to us.HARITA
She will know how to honour you!
IL RE
La vedrò…
Ma andate, buoni eremiti! Or io comanderò
Che la selvaggia caccia abbia tregua,
E prima di seguirvi io stesso voglio purificarmi
Nelle sacre onde della fonte Malini!HARITA
Che il ciel ti doni un figlio
Come te virtuoso, che regga l’Universo!
THE KING
I shall see her…
But go now, good hermits! I shall now give orders
To stop the cruel hunt,
And before following you, I myself shall seek purification
In the sacred waters of the Malini spring!HARITA
May heaven give you a son
As virtuous as you, one who shall rule the Universe!

(The hermits slowly climb up the hill, then enter the monastery. The King remains for a moment absorbed in thought, then, as in a dream, he sighs:)

THE KING
A son!

(He then walks towards the spring. Suddenly from within the forest the fresh voices of young girls interrupt his reverie.)

ANUSUYA (appears carrying a bunch of flowers)
This way, this way, my friends!

(While she is moving towards the moss-covered bench, she is struck by the early blossoming of a great vine. She drops the flowers and with great joy, turning towards the forest, she calls:)

ANUSUYA
Priyamvada! Sakuntala! Come quick!

(The King has moved towards the scrub on the right, but he can see what is happening on the stage. Priyamvada and Sakuntala can be seen responding to their friend’s call.)

ANUSUYA
What wonder! A miracle!
The vine has blossomed early!

(Priyamvada and Anusuya joyfully approach the vine. Sakuntala, troubled, remains still, and with her arms stretched behind her she almost seeks the support of a nearby tree-trunk.)

PRIYAMVADA
È la buona novella!
Essa ci dice che ben presto
Sarai chiesta… in isposa!

THE KING (strongly touched by Sakuntala’s beauty, exclaims with heartfelt admiration:)
Divine!(The two friends, meanwhile, turn to Sakuntala.)PRYIAMVADA
It is a happy sign!
It tells us that soon someone
Will ask you… to marry him!SAKUNTALA (shy, hiding her face with her arm and making a few steps forward)
Taci!

Be quiet!

PRIYAMVADA (smiling at Anusuya who is gathering water at the spring, then rejoining Sakuntala)
Kanva had predicted it!
(in a subdued tone, as if repeating a prophecy)

“If the vine blossoms early
It is a good omen for Sakuntala!”

(Priyamvada, with a meaningful smile, gathers the fallen flowers and carries them to the bench, to arrange them.)

SAKUNTALA
No!

Ecco, amica! Acqua pura di fonte!

(Sakùntala vuol prendere l’annaffiatoio; ma Anùsuya gentilmente schermendosi:)

ANUSUYA
Ma ad ogni pianta devi dar ristoro…
Le più sfiorite ti saran più grate…
Non le dimenticare!SAKUNTALA
No! Porgi!

SAKUNTALA
SAKUNTALA
No! I do not want to listen to you!ANUSUYA (returning with a full watering can, to Sakuntala)
Here, my friend! Pure spring water!(Sakuntala wants to take the watering can from her; but Anusuya gently holds it back:)ANUSUYA
But you must water every plant…
The most withered ones will be most grateful…
Do not forget them!SAKUNTALA
No! Give it to me!
You know that I love them all like a sister!(Sakuntala and Anusuya move together toward the back; Sakuntala goes to water her plants, Anusuya goes to the mossy bench, talking with Priyamvada and helping her.)THE KING (still in admiration)
Ah! Beautiful maiden!
Dreamlike vision!
Your lips are like a rose-bud!
Your arms are two slender tree limbs!
Your fresh youth clings to your being
As a delicate flower!
You reveal to me for the first time
The enchantment of real life!(In bending around her flowers, Sakuntala makes a gesture of discomfort, then speaks to her friends:)

SAKUNTALA

Anùsuya,
Priyàmvada m’ha troppo stretto il seno,
Dislacciami!

ANUSUYA (accorrendo e rivolta a Priyàmvada)
Senti? T’accusa!

Anusuya,
Priyamvada has bound my breasts too tightly,
Unlace me!

ANUSUYA (smartly moving towards Sakuntala and addressing Priyamvada)
You hear? She is blaming you!

(Anusuya loosens Sakuntala’s sash and, freed from the annoying pressure, Sakuntala shakes her head gracefully, making her young breasts bob gently.)

PRIYAMVADA (smiling)
Don’t blame anyone!
It is your youth which is blossoming,
Impatient, unstoppable!

(The King, who has followed the scene, with increasing admiration, exclaims:)

IL RE
Ah!

SAKUNTALA (accendendosi)
Ancora… Via! Ah!

PRIYAMVADA (comicamente)
Ohimè! Come aiutarti?

ANUSUYA
Come?
THE KING
Ah! Live, maiden, that I may live!(He then tries to draw nearer, still hiding behind the shrubbery. Suddenly, Sakuntala motions away an annoying insect. She repeats the motion with increasing agitation.)SAKUNTALA
Help! Help!ANUSUYA and PRIYAMVADA (running to her)
What is the matter?!SAKUNTALA (moving towards the centre of the stage and waving her arms to defend herself from the insect)
A bee! A nasty bee
Is trying to sting my face!(The two friends can barely suppress their laughter.)SAKUNTALA (getting upset)
Again… Go away! Ah!PRIYAMVADA (humorously)
Alas! How can we help you?

ANUSUYA
How?

SAKUNTALA
Scacciatela! Difendetemi!

O ape, come t’invidio

Ah! Atterrata!
SAKUNTALA
Chase it away! Protect me!(Sakuntala is almost angry at her friends who are not seriously trying to help her. Still a little amused, they finally start to try and chase the persistent bee away, using branches and the hems of their dresses.)THE KING (behind the foliage)
O bee, how I envy you!
You touch her face and her beautiful eyes!
You teach her new moves, new enchantments!ANUSUYA and PRIYAMVADA (with a joyful shout)
Ah! It’s gone!

SAKUNTALA (pronta)
No! Ancora minaccia! Mi persegue…

ANUSUYA e PRIYAMVADA
Che possiamo di più?

SAKUNTALA (disperata)
Non ho più scampo!

ANUSUYA e PRIYAMVADA
Invoca il Re!

IL RE (sussultando di gioia)
Ah!

SAKUNTALA
Soccorso!

PRIYAMVADA
O nobile straniero, come vedi, nessuno!
SAKUNTALA (quickly)
No! It is still threatening me! It follows me…ANUSUYA and PRIYAMVADA
What more can we do?SAKUNTALA (desperately)
I can’t get rid of it!ANUSUYA and PRIYAMVADA
Invoke the King!THE KING (happily thrilled)
Ah!SAKUNTALA
Help!THE KING (surely coming out of the forest and stepping forward)
Who dares to threaten this maiden?(The girls stop for a moment in surprise. Then Priyamvada says without fear:)PRIYAMVADA
O noble stranger, as you can see, nobody!
(still smiling and pointing at Sakuntala)
Sakuntala was afraid and cried out
Because of an insistent bee…(The King stares at Sakuntala who lowers her gaze. Then, with extreme tenderness, he says:)
IL RE
Sakùntala! Ho sentito narrar
Della fanciulla ch’è figliuola di Kanva!

(Priyàmvada e Anùsuya si guardano stupite. Poi Anùsuya, più ardita:)

ANUSUYA
E come? Non sei tu straniero?
THE KING
Sakuntala! I have heard about the young maiden
Who is Kanva’s daughter!(Priyamvada and Anusuya look at each other, surprised. Then Anusuya, growing bolder:)ANUSUYA
But how? Are you not a stranger here?

PRIYAMVADA (rispettosamente)
Onore a te, signore!

ANUSUYA (come l’amica)
Sii tu il benvenuto tra noi!…

PRIYAMVADA (con dolce letizia)
Sakùntala… Cara, va,
Cogli I frutti più belli,
I fiori più fragranti,
E reca l’offerta a l’ospite!

ANUSUYA (piano, curiosa, a voce bassa)
Priyàmvada, ascolta!
Chi sara’ lo straniero bello e grave?

PRIYAMVADA (le fa cenno d’aspettare)
Taci! forse presto sapremo!…

(poi, rivolta al Re)

Signore, non vorresti sedere accanto a noi?
Sarai stanco!

IL RE (richiamato alla realtà)
O gentil fanciulle,

THE KING (collecting himself, but still somewhat hesitatingly:)
Yes, I am a pilgrim
Sent by the King to visit the monastery in the forest!PRIYAMVADA (respectfully)
Honor to you, sir!ANUSUYA (like her friend)
You are welcome amongst us!…PRIYAMVADA (with sweet delight)
Sakuntala… Dear, go and
Gather the fairest fruit,
The most fragrant flowers,
To present to our guest!(Sakuntala bows and moves away toward the right. Before disappearing, she turns her head to look: but, meeting the King’s eyes, she rushes out into the woods. The King, still transfixed, takes a few steps, as if to follow her.)ANUSUYA (softly, inquisitively, whispering)
Pryiamvada, listen!
Who can this handsome and noble stranger be?PRIYAMVADA (motioning her to wait)
Quiet! We may soon find out!…(then, turning to the King)Sir, would you like to sit beside us?
You must be tired!THE KING (brought back to reality)
O kind maidens,
If I may question you…

(The King and the maidens move toward the bench and sit down.)

THE KING
Wise Kanva,
The austere leader of the anchorets…(as if looking for the right words)

…ha trascorso I suoi giorni
Assorto in continuo pregar –
E Sakùntala è sua figlia?
Come mai?

PRIYAMVADA (con accento ispirato)
Sakùntala è di casta sovrana!
(in tono misterioso)
In un tempo lontano
Il potente Kaussika, il re asceta,
Indugiava solingo a meditar nella foresta…
A un tratto, ecco, gli apparve
Una fanciulla bella di bellezza divina…

ANUSUYA
Una ninfa…

PRIYAMVADA
La Primavera splendea tutt’intorno
Tiepida e dolce.
Ei la vide e… (ritraendosi)IL RE (incuorandola a proseguire)
Intendo!

PRIYAMVADA
Or ella, bianca e tenera, allieta l’eremo

Finalmente, mio Re!…
…spent his life
Absorbed in continuous prayer –
And Sakuntala is his daughter?
How can it be?PRIYAMVADA (speaking in an inspired tone)
Sakuntala is of royal lineage!
(in a mysterious tone of voice)
A long time ago
Powerful Kaussika, the ascetic king,
Was lingering alone in the forest, meditating…
Suddenly, before his eyes appeared
A lovely maiden, of divine beauty…ANUSUYA
A nymph…PRIYAMVADA
Spring was shining all around,
Warm and sweet.
He saw her, and… (hesitating)THE KING (encouraging her to go on)
I understand!PRIYAMVADA
Thus Sakuntala was born and then abandoned…
But Kanva found her and cared for her like a father…
Now, innocent and sweet, she brightens up the monastery
And places flowers over the old, withered tree-trunk!(The King is deeply moved by the story; yet his face lights up with a great hope.
The maidens respect his silence. He is about to stand up, when he suddenly spots Sakuntala, who is running back to her friends, excited. In the meantime the King’s equerry arrives, breathless.)
THE EQUERRY
At last, my King!…

Signore!

Ella soffre?
Un’ombra vela I begli occhi languenti!

PRIYAMVADA
Non è nulla, signore…
Si leva innanzi l’alba
Per compiere I suoi riti…

ANUSUYA
Non vedi? Rifiorisce!
THE THREE MAIDENS (quite frightened)
The King!THE KING (clearly vexed, sternly addressing the equerry)
What do you want?…THE EQUERRY (humbly)
Sire!
We were all greatly worried… we feared…(the King makes a gesture which silences the equerry, making him even more subdued.)THE EQUERRY
The hunting party must head back…
(hesitatingly)
How much longer will you be?…(The King, torn between opposing feelings, remains for a moment unsure, then calmly but firmly:)THE KING
I command my people
Never again to disturb the peace of the monastery!
Let the hunting stop!…
Go now! I shall follow!(The equerry respectfully bows to the King and leaves.
The King follows him with his eyes; then turns to the maidens; seeing that Priyamvada and Anusuya are caring for Sakuntala who, during the scene has collapsed, unconscious, on the bench, he hastens to help.)
THE KING
Is she ill?
A shadow is veiling her beautiful, languishing eyes!PRIYAMVADA
It is nothing, my lord…
She gets up before dawn
To carry out the sacred rites…

ANUSUYA
There, you see? She is coming around!

(Sakuntala, conscious again, noticing the King’s attentions for her:)
SAKUNTALA
O grande Re, perdonaci!
Certo… fummo leggere, irriverenti…

IL RE (indulgente, poi subito appassionato)
Sì, vi perdono…
Ma resta e lascia ch’io ti stia accanto
E respiri la brezza del tuo sospir!

PRIYAMVADA (dolcemente a Sakùntala)

(Via)

PRIYAMVADA (come per trattenerla)
No…sola tu non potrai ghermirlo…
T’aiuterò!
(Fa per seguirla.)SAKUNTALA
Oh! Restate, restate…
Ah! M’hanno abbandonata!…

IL RE (con passione)
O tenera gemma di fiore…
Non ti turbare, scaccia ogni timore…
Io ti servirò come le amiche…
Ordina!
SAKUNTALA
O great King, forgive us!
Surely… We were frivolous, disrespectful…THE KING (indulgent, then suddenly impassioned)
Yes, I forgive you…
But stay and allow me to be near you
And to breathe the breath of your sigh!PRIYAMVADA (sweetly to Sakuntala)
Do not deny the King his wish!ANUSUYA (who has moved a few steps away, indicating the thick forest:)
Priyamvada…
The wild fawn is lost,
I shall lead him back to his mother.
(She leaves)PRIYAMVADA (as if to detain her)
No… You will not catch him by yourself…
I will help you!
(She starts to follow her.)SAKUNTALA
Oh! Stay, stay…
Do not leave me alone!PRIYAMVADA (pausing and making a broad gesture)
You are not alone,
The ruler of the world is with you!
(Resolutely rejoins her friend.)SAKUNTALA (looking around and getting increasingly worried)
Ah! They have forsaken me!THE KING (passionately)
O tender flower bud…
Do not be upset, dispel all fear…
I shall wait on you, just like your friends…
Command me!

Vedi? Il giorno è ancora ardente.
(He looks around.)Do you want me to wave the lotus fan?
Or would you like my shoulder
On which to rest your weary head?
Don’t you see? The day is still hot.
Non fuggire l’ombrìa delle liane,
Non cercar le ferite del sole!

SAKUNTALA (alzandosi lentamente)
O Re, t’allontana; te ne prego!
Il destino è crudele…
È spietato con me!
E l’accuso, l’accuso…
(Stupore del Re.)SAKUNTALA
Chè mi toglie ogni forza, ogni potere…
E mi travolge l’anima…
E mi schiude una via
Che m’è vietata per sempre!

IL RE (sempre con fervore)
No! Io non partirò…
Come partire, se t’ho veduta?
Come tornar lontano,
Se ho raggiunta la meta?
Se tu m’hai riaccesa la speranza?

SAKUNTALA (turbatissima)
Cessa!

IL RE (soavemente)
Dolce ribelle!…

SAKUNTALA
Non più!

IL RE
Eri in cima del sogno,
Or sei tutta nel cuore!

SAKUNTALA
Cessa!

IL RE (incalzando, come fuori di sè)
Inebriami… Affascinami… Deliro!
Do not run from the shade of the vine,
Do not look for the sun’s searing rays!SAKUNTALA (slowly rising)
O king, go away; I beg you!
Fate is cruel…
And with me it is merciless!
And I despise it, I despise it…
(the King is astonished)SAKUNTALA
Because it saps me of all strength, all power…
And it overwhelms my very soul…
And it is showing me a path
Which I am forbidden to take, ever!THE KING (still with ardor)
No! I shall not leave…
How could I leave, now that I have seen you?
How could I return so far away,
Now that I have reached my destination?
Now that you have rekindled hope within me?SAKUNTALA (deeply distressed)
Stop!THE KING (tenderly)
Sweet rebel…SAKUNTALA
No more!THE KING
You were at the top of my dreams,
Now you are all in my heart!SAKUNTALA
Stop!THE KING (urgently, as if possessed)
Enrapture me… Enchant me… I am delirious!

(He seizes her and tries to put his arms around her waist. A small bracelet of lotus blossoms falls, unseen, from her arm, while she quickly frees herself from his embrace and runs away, shouting:)

SAKUNTALA (almost screaming)
Have pity!

(The King pursues her. The scene remains empty. The impassioned voice of the King can be heard calling:)

Tenue vezzo gentile, talismano inatteso,
O catena profumata a un prigioniero d’amor…
Ti rimiro e ti bacio!
(poi, rinascendo alla speranza)
S’ella tornasse!
THE KING
Sakuntala!(The King reappears. He slowly walks down the hill. With his head hanging, he starts to go towards the thicket on the right. But the vine gets his attention and he looks at it with sadness. Then, lowering his gaze, he suddenly notices the lotus bracelet and quickly rejoices:)THE KING
Ah! Her bracelet!(He bends down, picks it up and gazes at it with tenderness:)Delicate bracelet
You graced her tender arm,
Fine and sweet jewel, unexpected charm,
O perfumed chain binding a prisoner of love…
I look at you and I kiss you!
(then, reinvigorated by hope)
If only she came back!
O heart… send her back to me!(And, as if drawn by his invocation, Sakuntala can be glimpsed from afar, moving nearer and anxiously searching everywhere. She then appears on the scene and, casting a quick glance at the King, she exclaims:)

SAKUNTALA
Ah! Il mio monile!
(avanzando risoluta)

SAKUNTALA (quasi implorando)
Nelle tue mani ci perderebbe entrambi!…

IL RE
L’ho trovato sul musco… Te lo rendo…
Ma prima chiedo un premio…
SAKUNTALA
Ah! My bracelet!
(she moves forward resolutely)
Give me back my bracelet!
(The King draws back, visibly hiding with both hands the small lotus bracelet against his chest.)SAKUNTALA (almost imploring)
We could both be lost in your hands!…THE KING
I found it in the moss…
I shall give it back to you… But first I demand a reward…

SAKUNTALA
T’affretta!…

IL RE
Tremo…
Vedi… Ho male agganciato…

SAKUNTALA
T’affretta!
(Sakuntala looks around, even more confused.)

THE KING
Allow me to fasten it on you… (He moves closer to her)
What do you fear?
(He takes her by the hand and leads her to the bench. They sit down. Sakuntala, shyly, without looking, gives her arm to the King who, with deliberate slowness, tries to fasten the bracelet.)

SAKUNTALA
Hurry up!…

THE KING
I tremble…
See… I fastened it wrong…

SAKUNTALA
Hurry up!

 IL RE
Oh! Il tuo braccio è puro
Come il cielo più puro!…
Guarda! Guarda!
Sul tuo braccio il monile riluce
Come arco di luna sul ciel!

SAKUNTALA
Non so… Non vedo…
Il polline dei fiori
M’ha velato le ciglia!

IL RE
Dolce mal, pena soave!
Non senti salire dal cuor
Un tepore d’effluvio febbril?
Non vedi sfiorar tra nimbi dorati
Un’onda di fiamma che abbaglia?…
È il soffio dell’anima mia…
È l’ansia di tutti I miei sogni…
Che anela guarirti…

(supplichevole, accennando a volerla baciare)
THE KING
Oh! Your arm is as pure
As the purest sky!…
Look! Look!
On your arm the bracelet shines
As the crescent moon in the sky!SAKUNTALA
I do not know… I cannot see…
Pollen from the flowers
Has covered my eyelashes!THE KING
Sweet suffering, gentle pain!
Can’t you feel a warm, feverish glow
Rise from within your heart?
Can you not see, amongst the golden clouds
A wave of flames, shining bright?…
It is the breath of my own soul…
It is the desire of all my dreams…
Which longs to heal you…(pleadingly, hinting that he wants to kiss her)
This way… This way…
(The maiden moves back in defense, but with less decision.)

THE KING
A kiss… only one kiss!…(And slowly moving his lips closer to the maiden’s face, he softly kisses her eyes.
Sakuntala arises. She wipes her eyelids with her hands: she seems transfigured. As soon as she starts to take a few steps, the King follows her, with outstretched arms.)
SAKUNTALA
Io vedo! Io vedo!
Oh! Meraviglia!
Strani raggi sfavillan!
Gemme ed ori nell’aria…
Tutto splende!
Io mi sento librata…
Circonfusa d’incanti…
E un palpito di canto
Mi solleva… M’inebria!…
La liana è fiorita…
Brillano nuovi fiori…
Il musco odoroso
Emana un profumo più vivo…

IL RE
Dolce cuor!

SAKUNTALA
E fiori, e fiori intorno
Mi ridono… m’invitano…

IL RE (subitamente appassionato)
Solo mio fiore… solo sospiro…
Tutta mia!

SAKUNTALA (perdutamente)
Stringimi a te!

SAKUNTALA
I can see! I can see!
Oh! Wonder!
Strange rays are glittering!
Gems and gold are in the air…
Everything sparkles!
I feel like I am soaring…
Surrounded by miracles…
And a heart-warming song
Is lifting me upwards… Making me swoon!…
The vine is in bloom…
New flowers are gleaming…
The fragrant moss
Emits a sweet perfume…THE KING
Sweetheart!SAKUNTALA
All the flowers, all around me
Are smiling at me… are inviting me…THE KING (suddenly impassioned)
My only flower… my only desire…
You are all mine!SAKUNTALA (ecstatically)
Hold me against you! Embrace me!THE KING and SAKUNTALA
Forever in a kiss,
Entirely in a kiss…
Life, in never-ending ecstasy!
Further, further into the dream!(A long kiss unites them. A pause. Then the gentle warning voice of Priyamvada is heard.)THE VOICE OF PRIYAMVADA (off-stage)
Separate, nightingales!…
The night is approaching!(As if awakening, the lovers free themselves from their embrace, their hands still touching. The king kneels before the girl and, removing a valuable ring from his finger, he places it on her ring-finger. The lovers gaze at each other, lost in dreams: finally they start to move apart, almost responding to a fateful call.)
ATTO SECONDO

Fra I gradini del vano e l’accesso all’eremo è sparso qualche poggiuolo.

ANUSUYA
Sembrano lievi farfalle…

PRIYAMVADA (porgendoglieli)
Stillano ancor di rugiada!

ANUSUYA
In onore di tutto il creato
L’offerta sia grande!

(Anùsuya li prende, li dispone meglio: poi riunendo altri fiori nel canestro.)

ANUSUYA
E quelli dorati?…

PRIYAMVADA (sempre intenta a scegliere)

ACT TWO

The back of the scene is formed by the wall which surrounds the monastery. In the middle is a great gate. To the right of the gate, three steps lead to an arched opening. Behind the wall appears the sun- drenched forest. On the left is the temple and before it is a heavy altar. Between the altar and the wall lies the table for the ceremonial services. The monastery is on the right, built of live rock.
Between the steps leading to the opening and the entrance to the monastery are some shallow balconies.
When the curtain opens, the two maidens can be seen near the steps, busily placing garlands everywhere.

PRIYAMVADA (sitting, picking garlands from a basket and handing them to Anusuya, who is standing, admiring the first plaited garland)
Add these anemones…

ANUSUYA
They look like frail butterflies…

PRIYAMVADA (handing them to her)
They are still covered with dew-drops!

ANUSUYA
Let our offering in honour of all creation
Be a worthy one!

(Anusuya takes them, makes a better arrangement: then gathers more flowers from the basket.)

ANUSUYA
And the golden ones?

PRIYAMVADA (still busy choosing flowers)
Those, too!

ANUSUYA (after taking the other flowers herself)
They are so dear to Sakuntala…

PRIYAMVADA (volgendo gli occhi al vano)
Che il Cielo si plachi per lei!
PRIYAMVADA (looking at the opening)
May Heaven stop tormenting her!

ANUSUYA
Oh! Poterla rivedere col sorriso d’un tempo!…
Ogni dì ci appare più stanca… più triste!

PRIYAMVADA

E ancora s’indugia…

LA VOCE DI DURVASAS (interna)
Sakùntala, apri!

(Le fanciulle sostano in ascolto.)
ANUSUYA
Oh! If we could see her smiling like before!…
Every day she seems more weary… more unhappy!PRIYAMVADA
Arrange the incense bowls…(Anusuya is about to do so, but she stops and says to Priyamvada:)ANUSUYA
But tell me… why has everything changed Since the King’s departure?(with conviction)He will return!… He promised!…PRIYAMVADA (shaking her head in doubt)
In the luxury of his palace…
Surrounded by the charms of a hundred mistresses,
How could he remember his secret wedding
With the little maiden of the forest?ANUSUYA (in thought, is about to leave, but stops again)
And Kanva?PRIYAMVADA (rising with more garlands, to Anusuya)
Oh! I am not worried about him!
He will give his blessing to the whole thing!
He has always said:
“Let the bride choose her groom”.
And fate is fulfilled!…(The maidens walk to the table. They pour water into the bowls, then light fires to burn the incense, which gradually begins to smoke.)

PRIYAMVADA (once more looking through the opening toward the forest)
And she still lingers…

THE VOICE OF DURVASAS (off- stage)
Sakuntala, open!

(The maidens stop, listening.)

ANUSUYA e PRIYAMVADA
Chi sarà?

(Anùsuya prende Priyàmvada per mano. Sostano ancora.

Scuote I lunghi capelli…
Brandisce il vincastro come una spada!

PRIYAMVADA (impaziente e disperata)
Ella sola può aprire, e non torna!…

ANUSUYA (scendendo un gradino)
Ahimè! Come placarlo?… Come?…

PRIYAMVADA (ansante)
Guarda…

Tu sprezzi l’ospite sacro?
Neghi l’offerta a un vecchio?
Gli vieti d’entrare a pregar?
Un dèmone è dunque su te?
ANUSUYA and PRIYAMVADA
Who can it be?(Anusuya takes Priyamvada by the hand. They stop again. But Priyamvada, suspicious, quietly pushes Anusuya toward the opening.)THE VOICE OF DURVASAS (more resentful)
Sakuntala, don’t you hear? Won’t you open?!(Anusuya slowly climbs up the steps and cautiously leans out to see. With a gesture of fear, she turns back to Priyamvada:)ANUSUYA
It is fearful Durvasas…THE VOICE OF DURVASAS (enraged)
Won’t you open? Won’t you open?ANUSUYA (leaning out farther, to get a better view)
He is shaking his long hair…
He is brandishing his crook like a sword!PRIYAMVADA (impatient and desperate)
Only she is allowed to open, and she is not back!…ANUSUYA (climbing down one step)
Alas! How can we appease him?… How?…PRIYAMVADA (panting)
Look… Search everywhere you can…
(coming closer, disheartened)
Do you see her?…(the two maidens peer into the thick forest, anxiously, while the implacable voice goes on.)

THE VOICE OF DURVASAS
Do you scorn your sacred guest?
Do you deny an old man his due?
Do you forbid him to enter and pray?
Is there a demon over you?

(Now Priyamvada moves again to the front of the stage, her hands covering her ears, so as not to hear. Anusuya, still trembling, joins her; they remain motionless, with staring eyes, as if petrified.)
LA VOCE DI DURVASAS
O fanciulla esecranda, ascoltami!

L’amore ti perda!
Chi assorbe I tuoi sogni,

Male a te!

PRIYAMVADA (accesa da una risoluzione ferma)
Io aprirò la porta…
Violerò la legge…

ANUSUYA (trattenendola)
Non osarlo!… Sacrilegio!

PRIYAMVADA (svincolandosi)

THE VOICE OF DURVASAS
O evil woman, hear me!(Priyamvada leaves her friend and goes near the gate, to hear him better.)THE VOICE OF DURVASAS
If love has overcome you,
May love be your ruin!
The one who is in your every dream,
The man who even now is forgetting you…
He shall be like a mindless drunk
Who awakens without memories!(Anusuya, more frightened than ever, approaches Priyamvada, questioning her with her eyes.)THE VOICE OF DURVASAS
He shall not remember he ever saw you,
He shall not remember he ever loved you!
Woe to you!PRIYAMVADA (inflamed with firm determination)
I shall open the gate…
I shall violate the law…ANUSUYA (holding her back)
Don’t dare!… It’s sacrilege!PRIYAMVADA (freeing herself)
I am doing it for her!… I am doing it for her!…
What does it matter!…(quickly gesturing to Anusuya)
The bowls!…THE VOICE OF DURVASAS
Be damned for life!

(The gate is opened, while Anusuya reluctantly follows Priyamvada’s orders. The apocalyptic figure of Durvasas appears, shining, bathed in sunlight.)

PRIYAMVADA (gettandosi ai suoi piedi)
Venerabile padre, perdona…
Ricevi l’omaggio da noi, povere ancelle!

DURVASAS (scuotendo il capo)
Non entrerò!

(Fa per andare.)
PRIYAMVADA (throwing herself at his feet)
Venerable father, forgive…
Accept this homage from us, poor servants!DURVASAS (shaking his head)
I shall not enter!(He starts to leave.)
PRIYAMVADA
Buon padre! Buon padre…
Ascolta le nostre preghiere…

(Qui Anùsuya avanzerà timidamente, porgendo due vassoi.)

PRIYAMVADA
Eccoti l’acqua pura,

DURVASAS
Ella, ella doveva!
Ella che da suo padre ebbe
Ogni rito commesso!…

ANUSUYA (dolce e appassionata)
Oh! tu puoi perdonarle…
Il suo cuore è stravolto
Da un amore indomabile!…

PRIYAMVADA e ANUSUYA
Perdonale, buon padre!

DURVASAS (prima tentennante, poi meno aspro, ma sempre severo e grave)
La parola fu detta…
E potere non ho di ritrarla!
Pure… v’aggiungerò:

(Le fanciulle fanno un gesto di ssperanza.)
PRIYAMVADA
Good father! Good father…
Listen to our prayers…(Anusuya now advances timidly, handing him two bowls.)PRIYAMVADA
Take this pure water,
Let me bathe your feet in it…
Take this rice…
I have soaked it in water that’s flavoured with flowers…
Sakuntala could not have offered you more!(Upon hearing her name again, Durvasas becomes enraged.)DURVASAS
She… it was her duty!
She was entrusted by her father
With all the rites!…ANUSUYA (gently and passionately)
Oh! You can forgive her…
Her heart is tortured
By an unrestrainable love!…PRIYAMVADA and ANUSUYA
Forgive her, good father!DURVASAS (hesitatingly at first, then less harsh, but still stern and grave)
The curse has been cast…
And I have not the power to retract it!
Yet… I can add to it:(The maidens show signs of hope.)

DURVASAS
“Solo un gioiello mostrato allo sposo
La salverà!”
(Crucciato, scompare via subito.)

PRIYAMVADA (levandosi)
Respiro!…
Credo appena a me stessa!…

ANUSUYA (triste e dubitante)
Ha detto: “un gioiello!?…”

PRIYAMVADA (rincuorandola con gioiosa agitazione)
Non ricordi l’anello
Donato a Sakùntala dal Re?
Ecco il pio talismano
Che spezzerà la sorte!
DURVASAS
“Only a jewel shown to her husband
Can save her!”
(Troubled, he quickly departs.)PRIYAMVADA (rising)
I breathe again!…
I can hardly believe myself!…ANUSUYA (sad and dubious)
He said: “a jewel!?…”PRIYAMVADA (comforting her with happy excitement)
Don’t you remember the ring
The King gave Sakuntala?
That is the good talisman
Which will break the curse!
ANUSUYA

PRIYAMVADA
Guardala!… Come è pallida!

ANUSUYA
Più pallida dell’alba!

PRIYAMVADA
L’anima l’è sfuggita!

(Anùsuya con grave dolcezza farà qualche passo verso Sakùntala.)

ANUSUYA
Sakùntala…
I fiori, le coppe, gli aromi…
Sono pronti per te!
ANUSUYA
Let’s lock the secret in our hearts!PRIYAMVADA (having glimpsed Sakuntala through the opening, she addresses Anusuya, softly:)There she is!…(The lily-like figure of the girl advances to the gate as in a dream. There she stops, her gaze still in a trance.)PRIYAMVADA
Look at her!… She is so pale!ANUSUYA
Paler than the dawn!PRYIAMVADA
Her soul has fled her!(Anusuya with deep tenderness takes a few steps towards Sakuntala.)ANUSUYA
Sakuntala…
The flowers, the bowls, the incense…
Are prepared for you!

(Sakùntala resta immobile)

ANUSUYA (a Priyàmvada)
Non ci ascolta!

PRIYAMVADA

PRIYAMVADA
Vuoi che ti porga I profumi?…

ANUSUYA
Non son belle le mie ghirlande?
(Sakuntala remains motionless)

ANUSUYA (to Priyamvada)
She cannot hear us!

PRIYAMVADA
Sakuntala! Don’t you think that the hour
For the evening rites has already passed?

(Sakuntala looks at the maiden, still in a daze.)

PRIYAMVADA
Do you want me to hand you the scents?…

ANUSUYA
Aren’t my garlands beautiful?

SAKUNTALA (con accento di profonda stanchezza)
Lasciatemi!

SAKUNTALA
Invano! Invano! Oggi come ieri…

SAKUNTALA (in a tone of profound weariness)
Leave me!(Sakuntala takes a few steps forward. The two maidens remain undecided; then they slowly depart, sad and mournful, closing the gate behind them.
Sakuntala mechanically walks to the ceremonial table, takes a garland with both hands and goes towards the altar to arrange it. But when she reaches the foot of the altar, she drops the garland and stands there, her arms by her sides.)
SAKUNTALA
In vain! In vain! Today as yesterday…
He is not coming back… He will never come back!(Then, she wearily moves towards the opening, climbs the steps and stares at the sky. As if suddenly seeing a vision, she says with deep melancholy:)

O nuvola… nuvola leggera,
Che vaghi pei cieli, sul mar…
Nuvola… o candido soffio divino,
Respiro dei monti di là…
Buona sorella che sola a piacer
Puoi mutar di destino…
Sii messaggera pietosa di tutto il dolor
Che mi piange nel cuore!…
Va! Vola verso lo sposo,
Verso il dolce mio sposo
Che dorme in oblio d’amor!

VOCI LONTANE
Ah!

SAKUNTALA
Va! Va!

Uccelli dai vaghi colori
S’inseguono in corse brillanti,
Tra le aiuole fiorite…
Marmoree fontane
O cloud… weightless cloud,
You wander through the skies, across the seas…
Cloud… o pure breath of God,
Whiff of the distant mountains…
Kind sister whose destiny
No one but you can change…
Be the merciful messenger of the great sorrow
Which is tearing my heart!…
Go! Fly to my husband,
To my sweet husband
Who sleeps in oblivion of love!DISTANT VOICES
Ah!SAKUNTALA
Go! Go!
May a good wind help you
As my heart shows you the way!
Never grow weary…
And suddenly you will know
That you have reached your destination, o sister!(leaving the opening and moving to the front of the stage, as if even more enraptured)In the rich garden,
Birds of beautiful colours
Chase each other, darting, swift,
Amongst the flower beds…
Marble fountains
Vi sprizzan più alto nell’aria
Zampilli di gemme raggianti…
Sui prati muscosi
Cortei d’iridate fanciulle vedrai
Ondeggiar tra vapori di mille profumi,
In languide danze
Al ritmo di musiche blande…

(sempre più concitata)
Thrust skywards
Tall jets of sparkling gems…
On mossy meadows you’ll see
Processions of glittering maidens
Amidst vapours from a thousand perfumes,
Waving, alluringly dancing
To the rythms of musics of love…(becoming more excited)

Volteggiano i piccoli piè tintinnanti…
Balenano vividi sguardi,
E bocche vermiglie
Si cercan nell’ombra,
Desiose, anelanti…
Ah! Tu librati piano,
Con ansia repressa,
Con brivido lieve…
T’inchina, t’appressa
Poi t’abbandona
E l’inonda del pianto
Che tutta mi strazia!

VOCI (sempre internamente)
Ah!… Ah!…

Gloria! Gloria a Kanva! Gloria!
Small belled feet are whirling…
Bright eyes sparkle,
And crimson mouths
Seek each other in the shadows,
Desirous, breathless…
Ah! You hover silently,
Restrain your emotion,
With barely a shiver…
Bow down, draw near
Then release your despair
Let them feel all the tears
Which are rending my heart!VOICES (still off-stage)
Ah!… Ah!…(Sobbing, she nearly collapses onto the edge of the terrace facing the side entrance to the monastery.
Simultaneously with Sakuntala’s last words are heard the songs of praise of the hermits who accompany Kanva. The gate opens wide.)
PRIYAMVADA (rushing in joyfully, followed by Anusuya)
Sakuntala, your father has returned!…ANUSUYA
The master!(They both approach the distraught Sakuntala. They lift her up lovingly, supporting her.
Immediately thereafter the venerable figure of the ascetic can be seen, preceded by Harita and the young hermit; who enter the temple and come to stand by his side.
The other ascetics, in procession, humbly move towards the monastery, while the maidservants kneel down. Kanva, standing by the gate, opens wide his arms, into which Sakuntala, her head low, throws herself with abandon and passion.)
CHORUS OF HERMITS
Glory! Glory to Kanva! Glory!
SAKUNTALA
Padre! Padre!
SAKUNTALA
Father! Father!

KANVA (carezzandole dolcemente I capelli)
Solleva la fronte… Guardami…

KANVA
Fu nell’ora solenne che varcavo
Le porte del tempio di fuoco!
Nel mistero una voce si udì:
Inneggiava alle nozze d’una bella
E d’un forte, e cantava:
“Sakùntala, madre felice,
Porta in seno un fiore di vittoria
Che il mondo abbaglierà!
Egli conquisterà le sette isole;
E ovunque il suo carro di battaglia
Brillerà come fiamma inestinguibile,

KANVA (tenderly caressing her hair)
Lift up your head… Look at me…
I know everything!…(The bystanders move in surprise and trepidation. Sakuntala frees herself from her father’s embrace, troubled again.)KANVA
It was in the solemn hour when I crossed
The gates of the temple of fire!
Misteriously, a voice was heard:
It sang of the wedding of a beautiful maiden
With a gallant man, and it said:
“Sakuntala, happy mother,
Carries in her womb a flower of victory
Who will dazzle the world!
He shall conquer the seven isles;
Everywhere his battle chariot
Will shine as a never-ending flame,
And the people, respectful and rejoicing
Will acclaim him Lord of the earth!…”(Everyone is astonished and looks admiringly at Sakuntala, who is transfigured by the unexpected revelation.)KANVA
You brothers, bow! And you, daughter,
It is time for you to leave the monastery!…(Hearing this announcement, the maidens, deply saddened, surround Sakuntala almost as if unconsciously wanting to hold her back.)KANVA
Harita will accompany you
To the royal residences!…
Let the handmaidens adorn you
With garlands and a veil…
That your husband may see you in all your beauty!(The maidens, still saddened, immediately start to obey the order, then, their heads lowered, they return into the monastery.)

SAKUNTALA (her eyes shining with tears, clasps her hands with a motion of love)
Padre!… Padre mio santo…
Come dirti il mio cuore!?…
Tu sciogli con un cenno
La lunga attesa
Al mio sogno tremendo!
Ecco… m’arrendo…
E piangere vorrei di gioia…
Ma non so ritrovar
Le vie dolci del pianto!
Ché mai non seppi
Nè sentii com’ora
Quanto amor t’ho voluto,
Quanto amore ti voglio!
Ed è forza partir,
Dirti addio… dire addio
Alle care compagne dell’infanzia…
Alla foresta che fu tutta mia!
Oh! Abbracciami ancora:
Proteggimi, padre…
Ama tutto per me,
Quando non ci sarò più!
Father!… My holy father…
How can I explain my feelings!?…
With a word you end
The long agony
Of my frightful nightmare!
Here… I surrender…
I wish I could weep tears of joy…
But I cannot find again
The sweet release that tears provide!
For I never knew,
Never have I felt as now,
How much I loved you,
How much I love you!
Yet I must leave,
Bid you farewell… bid farewell
To the dear companions of my childhood…
To the forest which I felt was mine!
Oh! Hold me again:
Protect me, father…
Love everything for me,
When I am gone!

VOCI DELLA SELVAAh!… Ah!…

KANVA
Ascolta… Quali voci… Come nel tempio!
Gli spiriti divini risvegliano la selva…
Cantano a te, Sakùntala!
Trilli e gorgheggi s’uniscono

(Kanva holds her again in a sweet embrace. Mysterious voices are heard from the depths of the woods. Father and daughter turn around ecstatically.)

VOICES OF THE WOODS

Ah!… Ah!…

KANVA
Listen… Those voices… As in the temple!
Divine spirits awaken the woods…
They sing to you, Sakuntala!
Trills and birdsongs join
The sighs of the rushing zephyrs!
It is your vines…
It is all your flowers
That are singing your praises! They announce to you
The joy of Heaven and earth!

(The two maidens reappear. Priyamvada is carrying flowers and Anusuya a veil of the same colour as the moon, transparent, with faint moonbeams and almost invisible stars.)

KANVA (prendendo Sakùntala per mano)
Vieni!

KANVA (taking Sakuntala by the hand)
Come!(He then leads her to the altar. A ritual ceremony, as in a wedding, takes place. Meanwhile, the two ascetics light up the scents and the grains of incense. Flames and vapours rise high. Anusuya hands Kanva the veil; he drapes it over Sakuntala’s head and shoulders, while she kneels at the foot of the altar. Then he solemnly says:)KANVA
You control your own fate: You have the King’s ring!
Go, may your journey be smooth!

(Slowly, followed by the two hermits, Sakuntala heads for the forest, which is lit by the red flames of the setting sun. Her friends follow her with their eyes, deeply saddened. Then they fall into each other’s arms, softly crying. Kanva, upright, motionless, with the knowledge of a duty duly discharged, slowly drops his arms and half-closes his eyes.)

ATTO TERZO

ACT THREE

The scene represents the interior of the royal palace.
Heavy beams cross the vaulted ceiling, allowing the King’s apartment to be seen, at an angle, in the background, on the left side. On the right can be seen wide arches, through which opulent gardens are strewn with fantastic objects of beauty, all the way to the distant park.
The left side, less deep, can be shut off by a curtain adorned with mysterious symbols. Between the curtain and the front of the stage is a door: the King’s portal. The King is sitting on a couch, placed near the center of the stage, under the largest pillar. In addition to the entrance from the garden, there is a small, low door at the right.
At the beginning of the Act, the curtain of the apartment is open, to allow space for the dancers who, advancing from inside, will accompany the three essential movements of the “Dance of the Bee”. The female singers are lined up in the background, in languid groupings under the bluish lights which shine down from unseen chandeliers; the manservants are near the King’s portal, some sitting, some leaning against it.

Have them stop singing! Have them stop dancing! Go!(One of yhe men standing nearby quickly carries out the order. The curtain is rapidly closed. The equerry, still uncertain, is about to leave but, seeing the unhappy King laying down on his couch, timidly says:)THE EQUERRY
Sire… Kanva’s hermits
Are asking to see you…
They have been waiting a long time…
A veiled woman is with them.THE KING (after a moment – holding back a gesture of impatience)
Very well, I shall hear them…THE EQUERRY
I am going…

(Pausa.
(A pause. The King rests his chin on his closed fists, as if under the spell of a dark mistery. The two hermits come forward from the end of the garden, followed by the young woman, who remains standing further to the right.)
HARITA e IL GIOVANE EREMITA
(inchinandosi)
Onore al Re!

IL RE (sempre preoccupato; alzandosi)
Onore a voi, santi asceti!
Il pio Kanva è felice?
Quali ordini m’invia?

HARITA
“Tu sei celebrato…
Come il capo di tutte le genti…
Sakùntala è un fior di virtù,
Ricevila come tua sposa:
Ella è madre!”

IL RE (stupefatto)
È questo che Kanva ti disse?

HARITA (solenne)
Questo!…

IL RE (sempre meravigliato)
Buon eremita, io più non ti comprendo!…
HARITA and THE YOUNG HERMIT
(bowing)
Honour to our King!THE KING (still concerned; rising)
Honour to you, o holy ascetics
Is pious Kanva happy?
What does he ask of me?HARITA (stepping forward)
Pious Kanva says to you: “I approve of the marriage
Which with a secret ceremony has bound you, o King…
To my beloved daughter!”
(The King shows a sign of surprise.)HARITA
“You are renowned…
As the ruler of all peoples…
Sakuntala is a flower of virtue,
Welcome her as your bride:
She is to be a mother!”THE KING (astonished)
Is this what Kanva told you?HARITA (solemnly)
It is!…THE KING (still amazed)
Good hermit, I do not understand you!…

Sant’uomo…
Se Kanva da me altro non chiede,
Puoi ritrarti in pace!

(fa per andarsene.)

IL GIOVANE EREMITA (supplichevole)
No!… Fermati ancora…
Nel nome di Kanva…
Tu la vedrai…
Tu devi… rivederla…

HARITA (in an altered tone of voice)
You do not understand?…
Has the fever of power so clouded your mind?THE KING (jolted, but restraining himself)
Holy man…
If that is all Kanva wanted from me,
You can leave in peace!(he starts to leave)THE YOUNG HERMIT (pleadingly)
No!… Wait…
In the name of Kanva…
You will see her…
You must… see her again…(approaching Sakuntala he gently lifts her veil)

HARITA (prorompendo, sdegnato e minaccioso)
Cattivo Re! Tu offendi l’asceta
E tu glielo profani, e tu glielo distruggi,
Tu!
THE KING (who almost unconsciously has stopped, says to himself with rapture)
O sweetest of faces…
Tender, sorrowful eyes…
Where have I seen you? Where?
(in a sad tone of voice)
Anchorets, alas!…
This noble woman was never my bride!(Sakuntala, who looks pale and troubled, is stirred by a shiver in her face and in her arms.)THE KING
Terrible would be my guilt
If I took her in, almost a mother…
I will not taint myself with such an evil act!HARITA (breaking forth, scornful and threatening)
Ignoble King! You insult the ascetic
Who allowed you to take his pure treasure!
And you profane and destroy it,
You!

Sakùntala… a te…

SAKUNTALA
Sposo!

(subito correggendosi)

No… Re! Grande mio Re!
Eccomi innanzi a te,
Pover’anima affranta
Avvilita, schiantata…
E tu hai potuto spregiare
L’onesta fanciulla
Che nell’eremo del bosco
THE YOUNG HERMIT (with a determined motion, grabbing his upraised arm)
Cease, brother…
We have said what we had to say!
(consoling the girl and pushing her forward)
Kanva spoke.
Sakuntala… now it’s your turn…(Sakuntala, stiff at first, her eyes staring, slowly moves forward, as if gathering all her energies; then in a thin and emotional voice, while protecting her bosom with both hands:)SAKUNTALA
Husband!(quickly correcting herself)No… King! My noble King!
I am here now, before you,
A poor soul broken by grief
Humiliated, destroyed…
How can you so despise
The honest maiden
That you honoured with your love
Onorasti d’amore?
Così dolce in pietà,
Sanno, ben sanno che bacio fremente
 La tua bocca mi diè…
In the sylvan monastery?
(with heartfelt passion)
Even if your eyes can no longer see,
If your heart is devoid of feeling,
If love no longer dwells within you,
Even if suddenly, one night…
Your memories were forever lost,
The heavenly stars and the moon above,
So compassionate and dear,
Remember, remember well how passionate was the kiss
That your lips placed on mine…

SAKUNTALA (contorcendosi in preda a viva disperazione)
Sciagura!
Ah! Il destino m’è contro…
(e affannosamente, incalzando verso il Re)
Pure… quel giorno… ricorda…
Il mio giardino fiorito,
E l’ape maligna che già mi feriva,
E il tuo improvviso apparire!
Che fiori, che frutta
Non colsi e t’offersi…
E il cerbiatto fuggito,
E me stessa smarrita
Fuggente da te, e il mio ritorno!…

(con dolore più acerbo – a sè stessa)
And the fine royal gift,
The precious jewel…
You must surely remember…(She extends her right hand forward without hesitation to show the ring, but observing the indifference of the King, she looks at her hand again, and cannot repress a cry of painful astonishment.)SAKUNTALA
The ring… My ring…(The two hermits run to her anxiously.)THE YOUNG HERMIT (emotionally)
Perhaps you lost it by the river…SAKUNTALA (writhing, overtaken by deep despair)
O misfortune!
Ah! Fate is against me…
(and breathless, swiftly approaching the King)
Still… that day… remember…
My garden in bloom,
And the wicked bee that tried to hurt me,
And your sudden appearance!
What flowers, what fruits
I gathered and offered to you…
The lost fawn,
I myself being lost
Running from you, and my return!…(with even harsher pain – to herself)
Ah! Perchè ritornai!
… E il monile!
Il tenero monile!…
Lo miravi commosso…
E volesti allacciarlo al mio braccio!…
Tu tremavi com’io tremavo…
Ricorda!

Vedi… Vedi…

No!

SAKUNTALA
Come allor!

IL RE
No!
Menzogna!

SAKUNTALA (con grido straziante)
Ah!…

IL RE
Follìa!
Ah! Why did I return?!
…And the bracelet!
The delicate bracelet!…
You gazed at it with emotion…
And tried to fasten it to my arm!…
You trembled, as I trembled…
Remember!(moving closer to him, whispering tenderly the King’s words)“Your arm is pure
As the purest sky…”(The King shows signs of uncertainty: interpreting this as a favourable sign, the girl continues, with a happier tone.)See… See…
That divine tenderness is coming back… as then!THE KING (rising in all his majesty)
No!SAKUNTALA
As then!THE KING
No!
It’s a lie!SAKUNTALA (with a heart-rending cry)
Ah!…THE KING
It’s madness!

SAKUNTALA
Orror!

SAKUNTALA
Horror!(She almost collapses, lifeless – but the two hermits support her – even the King and the equerry show pity for the young girl, who stands up again with painful difficulty: she looks one last time into the King’s eyes, while the King is unable to bear her gaze; then, making a slight gesture towards the hermits, she lowers her veil and slowly and deliberately departs, solemn and proud, followed by the two sorrowful hermits. The King follows the girl with his eyes; then, extremely troubled, he retires to his apartment, while the equerry stands by the door. A pause. The equerry is suddenly aware of a murmuring of approaching voices. A few men of the guard rush into the scene, dragging a young fisherman, shaking with fear.)
LO SCUDIERO (a sè stesso)
E che ancor?

UNO DELLA SCORTA
È un ladro… Guarda!…
(riconoscendolo subito)
L’anello del Re!
(rivolto al povero)
THE EQUERRY (to himself)
What now?ONE OF THE GUARDS
He’s a thief… Look!…
(and he hands him a ring)THE EQUERRY (moving forward to question him)
A ring…
(immediately recognising it)
The King’s ring!
(addressing the poor fisherman)

Dove l’hai rubato?…

IL PESCATORE (con voce supplichevole)
Non l’ho rubato!…
L’ho trovato sul greto del fiume…
Abbi pietà!

LO SCUDIERO (fissandolo con sospetto)
Tu menti…

Alzati!… Prendi!

(poi, dominando la sorpresa generale, a tutti, affannosamente)
Where did you steal it?…

THE FISHERMAN (with pleading voice)
I did not steal it!…
I found it on the shore of the river…
Have mercy!

THE EQUERRY (staring at him with suspicion)
You are lying…

(to the guards)

Hold him tight… that he may not escape…
The King will judge him!

(The equerry rapidly crosses the doorway to the King’s apartment. In the meantime the young fisherman starts to show signs of utter despair, as the guards threateningly shake him. But from his apartment, the King’s voice can be heard in a cry of invocation.)

THE KING’S VOICE
Sakuntala! Sakuntala!

(Appearing after a moment, as if beside himself, he throws a purse of money to the pleading fisherman.)

THE KING (extremely upset)
Rise!… Take this!

(then, dominating the general surprise, breathlessly, to everyone)

Presto… correte… e dite a Sakùntala

O gioia!… Pura gioia di cielo,
Sogno immenso di vita…
Ch’io ti baci… ch’io ti baci ancor!…
Con me!… sul cuore… per sempre!…

(con rapimento)

Raggi nuovi di stelle
M’abbaglian d’ardor!
Nuovo soffio odoroso
Spira su l’acque e le fronde…
Ebbrezza! Incanto!
Tra l’ombre leggère
S’effondono vaghi profumi…
Ella porge i bocciuoli
Ai cerbiatti diletti!
Ondeggian le liane
Su la fonte canora!
Scherzano i zeffiri lievi
Sui capelli disciolti…
E mille bisbigli la selva sospira!
Sboccia il suo candido sen
Come fiore all’aurora!…

(con suprema tenerezza)
Quickly…run… and tell Sakuntala
That the King awaits her… the King remembers…
The King loves her!
(He almost pushes them towards the steps, then composes himself, with the ring clenched in his hands and repeatedly kissing it.)THE KING
O joy!… Pure heavenly joy,
Never-ending life dream…
Let me kiss you… let me kiss you again!…
With me!… on my heart… forever!…(with rapture)New beams of starlight
Dazzle me with passion!
A new fragrant breeze
Flies over the waters and the trees…
The thrill! The enchantment!
Faint scents wander
Through transparent shadows…
She offers flower-buds
To her beloved fawns!
The vines are swaying
Over the rippling pool!
Light zephyrs gently play
With her loosened hair…
And the forest sighs with a thousand whispers!
Her lily-white breasts blossom
Like flowers at dawn!…(with the utmost tenderness)

Sakùntala!… Sakùntala!…
Sposa!… Madre attesa… madre designata!…

(accoratissimo)

E t’ho respinta!…
E non volli affisarvi,
Caro viso adorato, limpidi sguardi,
Fuoco velato di labbra imploranti!
(febbrilmente incalzando)
Ohimè!… Oh!…
Bocca aulente e casta!
Sii pietosa!
Ritorna al bacio eterno…
Al sogno eterno…

(nel parossismo dell’entusiasmo)
Sakuntala!… Sakuntala!…
Wife!… Longed-for mother… fateful mother!…(deeply grieved)And I rejected you!…
And refused to look
At your beloved face, at your limpid eyes,
At the veiled passion of your imploring lips!
(feverishly continuing)
Alas!… Oh!…
O mouth so fragrant and chaste!
Be merciful!
Return to our eternal kiss…
To our eternal dream…(at the height of enthusiasm)
Nimbo d’or!… Luce d’or!… Diva!… T’invoco… T’imploro…

Ebbene?…

LO SCUDIERO (ansante)
Un prodigio!… Un prodigio!…
La fanciulla fu vista lanciarsi
Verso lo stagno delle ninfe,
Le braccia tese al cielo
Come per invocar un aiuto divino!
A un tratto una nube di fiamma
L’avvolse, la ghermì…

IL RE (affannosamente)
E poi?!

LO SCUDIERO
Poi… più nulla!
Tutto era scomparso…
Solo… vedemmo gli eremiti,
Chinarsi sul suo velo
E adorarlo come cosa sacra!…
Golden cloud!… Golden light! Goddess!…
I invoke you… I implore you… Life of my life!(A distant rumble abruptly interrupts the King’s ecstasy. The King instinctively turns towards the back of the scene. He is standing in amazement when the equerry, breathless, arrives.)THE KING (very upset)
Well?…THE EQUERRY (panting)
A miracle!… A miracle!…
The girl was seen running
Towards the pond of the nymphs,
Her arms outstretched skywards
As if to invoke divine assistance!
Suddenly, a cloud of fire
Enveloped her and carried her away…THE KING (excited)
And then?!THE EQUERRY
Then… nothing more!
Everything vanished…
Only… we saw the hermits,
Bending over her veil
Adoring it as a sacred thing!…

Ah! Sortilegio iniquo! Maledizion!

VOCI FEMMINILI (interne)
Ah!…

LA VOCE DI SAKUNTALA
No! Re! Non disperar!
Dalle cime superne
Sfolgoranti di fiamme…
L’anima mia ti parla senza pena! Io ti perdono!
Il tuo cuore obblioso…
Piegò sotto l’incanto del destino!
Non t’accorar… Era scritto…
THE KING (destroyed, deeply distressed, in a crying voice)
Ah! Unjust sorcery! Malediction!(A convulsive tremor suddenly runs through him… he steps back and falls, almost fainting. The scene abruptly turns dark. Within his heart, the King hears Sakuntala’s tender voice, alone and distant at first, then surrounded by a diffuse murmuring of soft voices.)FEMALE VOICES (off-stage)
Ah!…SAKUNTALA’S VOICE
No! King! Do not despair!
From supernal mountains
Resplendent with flames…
My soul speaks to you without pain! I forgive you!
Your forgetful heart…
Was overcome by the spell of fate!
Do not grieve… It was written…
Che una vita di luce… nascesse
Dal martirio più profondo d’un cuor:
Tuo figlio!…
Eccolo!… Egli ti appar,

That a life of light… should be born
From the deepest suffering of a heart:
Your son!…
Behold him!… He appears to you,
The young hero of the
World!… Take him and remember Sakuntala,
Immortal Sakuntala!(A diffused light, at first bluish, then slowly turning pearly and almost golden, begins to shine at the back, growing brighter and gradually illuminating the entire scene. From the gates, from the gardens, groups of men and women appear, puzzled, wondering, as if expecting a revelation.
Distant trumpet calls are heard, gradually increasing in strength. When the joyful voices and the trumpet calls have reached their full intensity, the two hermits solemnly enter, followed by throngs of people.
Harita, who is carrying the child in his arms, under a veil, stops at the back of the scene. The King awakens from his stupor and together with all the people kneels down before the sight of the awaited heir, on whom a brilliant ray of unearthly light shines from on high.
Bells are joyfully ringing.)
